The trip includes time to use bat detecting equipment to track the bats on the evening. The bat activity will depend on the weather.
Please note
Wear warm clothing and suitable footwear – the towpath is uneven and unlit
Bring a headtorch or torch
Bat detecting equipment will be provided
The galley will be open from departure, serving hot and cold drinks, snacks and souvenirs.
Paul was employed by HCC and the Basingstoke Canal Authority as a Canal Ranger for 16 years (1995-2011).
Paul worked mainly on the Hampshire pound, part of his work involved bat surveys at Greywell tunnel and this led to an interest in bats. He joined the Hampshire Bat Group in 1996.
Whilst on the canal he studied part time at University of Bristol in the Bat Ecology and Bioacoustics Lab for a PhD. His study site was Greywell tunnel where he studied the Hibernal Ecology of Natterer’s bat (Myotis nattereri).
Paul now runs a small ecological consultancy along with his wife, providing advice on protected species but mainly specialise in bats.
