Celebrating 60 years of the Basingstoke Canal Society with a cruise and talk by Peter Whitlock on the bridges of the Basingstoke Canal.
Peter was born and grew up in the Farnborough area and, after living and working in Oxfordshire, returned to Farnborough in 2019. He has been a member of the Basingstoke Canal Society since 2023 and is a committed volunteer of the Tuesday work group, which helps maintain the canal. Peter leads the Society Archives team and he is also the author of the book The Bridges of the Basingstoke Canal.
Peter’s talk will be about the fascinating history of the bridges in general from the 18th century, when the canal was constructed, to the present day and the specific bridges that we pass under on the trip from Colt Hill to the Barley Mow. He will also have a laptop with a continuous slide show of pictures showing the bridges, mainly consisting of pictures that could not be included in his book for space reasons and others that he has found since the book was published.
Copies of his book will be available to purchase from the galley, and which Peter is happy to sign.
