Key Roles:
Treasurer for Trip Boat Operation
The Society wants a Treasurer to look after the accounting for the 2 trading subsidiaries, John Pinkerton Canal Cruises Ltd (JPCC) and Surrey and Hampshire Canal Cruises Ltd (SHCC), taking over the role from the current Treasurer fully from 1st January 2027.
JPCC operates the passenger trips and Charters for both our trip boats John Pinkerton II and Kitty II with SHCC running the onboard galley for John Pinkerton II. The boats’ active seasons last from March to the end of October.
The role includes: –
- Processing payments of invoices and expenses weekly for 2 bank accounts, one for each company.
- Recording of all transactions in Intuit Quickbooks, producing monthly reconciliations and management accounts, and reporting to the John Pinkerton Committee as required on finance matters.
- Quarterly VAT return for John Pinkerton Canal Cruises Ltd plus liaison with Auditors for the annual accounts, 31st December year end and the Treasurer for the main Society.
The current Treasurer who is retiring from the role normally spends on average 15 to 20 hours per month.

Help Protect the Assets of the Basingstoke Canal Society – Asset Review Project
The Basingstoke Canal Society is seeking a volunteer with experience in asset management to help us establish a robust system for managing the Society’s assets.
Our charity owns and manages a variety of equipment, tools, materials, and other assets that support our conservation, maintenance and community activities. We are looking for someone who can help us understand what we have, where it is located, and how it should be managed in the future.
Time Commitment : Flexible. Suggest an initial review project over approximately 3–6 months, followed by the option of ongoing support if desired. Contact us to find out more.
Admin Support
We are looking for a person to help the team on general admin for approximately a day a week (this could be flexible for example two half days). The role could include; following through new volunteer enquiries, helping organise volunteer days and other routine tasks.

Social Media Volunteer
We are looking for someone with social media skills to join our social media and marketing team to help plan and send out regular communications to the community. It is an interesting and exciting opportunity as we grow our reach where we reach over 75,000 people and have following nearing 10,000 on Facebook alone. Help increase our Membership
We have an active membership team but we are looking for someone with sales/marketing skills to help us plan and increase our membership. This is an interesting opportunity as you will be working with the marketing team and we welcome new ideas. To find out more please ‘apply to volunteer’.
Events Team
We currently have a very active Events Team but need more help to plan and attend events. In addition to several major events, the Society attends various local shows and sets up stands at strategic locations along the Canal to get people involved in the Canal and to attract new members to join us in our work.

Boat Champion
We are looking for a small team to help raise the profile of boats and navigation on the Canal.
The role is flexible but we need someone to help give more ‘voice’ to boats on the Canal and we would be suggesting that this includes:
- Working with organisations that use boats on the canal (Galleon Marine, Accessible Boating, canoe clubs, etc)
- Have contact with boat owners on the canal to get them involved. Also represent the interests of boaters at the twice yearly BCA boaters’ meeting
- Promote boating on the canal including feeding stories to the Society’s press and marketing team
Trustees
There is the opportunity to get involved and help lead the Society either as a Trustee or supporting one of our existing trustees (with the opportunity of a full trustee position at a later date). We already have a range of skills on the Board but we are in looking to get others involved in supporting the following trustees:
- Projects
- Health & Safety
- Building links with local businesses
- IT
- Working with local councils
Either as a trustee or in a ‘deputy’ role, provides a real opportunity to get involved in the work and direction of the Society and in so doing, directly help protect this wonderful local amenity for use by the community and boats for navigation.
