Trips On The Basingstoke Canal In Hampshire Aboard The John Pinkerton II

audio icon2 24x24

Are you looking for a way to unwind and relax from the pressures of everyday life? Then why not join us on the John Pinkerton II for a cruise in the peaceful surroundings of the Basingstoke Canal. At less than 3 mph, there is plenty of time to admire the passing countryside, spot the deer in the fields, and count the young ducklings and goslings. You may even see the bright flash of a kingfisher darting ahead of the boat, or the majestic flight of a heron circling round to return to its favourite bank to continue fishing.

We run public trips from our base at Colt Hill Wharf, Odiham. These last approximately 2½ hours, either eastwards towards Winchfield or to the west towards Greywell and Odiham (King John’s) Castle (the direction determined by the skipper). A family ticket for two adults and two children is great value at £30.

The John Pinkerton II is wholly owned by The Basingstoke Canal Society (a registered charity). The operating company is John Pinkerton Canal Cruises Ltd, and the crew are all trained volunteers.

The fully licensed bar is open on all cruises, and you can purchase real ale, spirits, coffee, tea, drinks, and light refreshments. Souvenirs are available to help you remember the occasion.

All proceeds from the trip boat go directly towards safeguarding the Basingstoke Canal for the future.

COVID Updates

23rd March: The Basingstoke Canal Society regrets to announce that due to COVID_19 concerns, all Charters and Public trips have been suspended during April and May. We hope to resume in June, and will keep a watching brief on the situation.

13th May: Government announced COVID restrictions continues to impose Social Distancing restrictions until at least 4th July. Thus all trips for June are cancelled; all charterers and those booked on Public Trips are being informed individually with options available.

9th June: While we wait for COVID lockdown restrictions to be relaxed sufficiently to re-commence cruising, we suggest that those wishing to book trips contact the booking team by email, expressing interest. The information that will help us design specific trips within any new guidelines are the size of your household group, how many households you want to bring, and day of the week / month for August and September.
We are taking bookings for 2021.
If your cruise is affected this year, why not consider postponing to next year?
We are extending the expiry date of ALL recently-purchased vouchers to the end of 2021 season.

10th June: It is with regret that we have to announce that all July trips have been cancelled, as under current restrictions, we are unable to operate passenger carrying trips; this seems likely to extend into July. We hope to review restrictions early-mid-July for August.
There has been a recent update to the ticket system operated by Web Ticket Manager, which appears to have gone badly. We are relying on our own copies of bookings taken before the change, and will be contacting all booking holders with options. We apologise for the disruption, and hope it will be corrected soon.
