SURREY AND HAMPSHIRE CANAL SOCIETY

Newsletter No. 7September 1967

RAMBLE
This will be held on Sunday, October 22, and will start from Basing, grid reference SU 663528, which is a road junction near Basing House at 11am., and make its way toward Greywell and North Warnborough. Unfortunately, both these places are a bit off the beaten track, so it will be necessary to juggle around with cars. People who require transport, please let the Secretary know.

PUBLICATIONS
The Society can nov offer limited Copies of our alternative policy for the canal - price 1s.

Also we have a short illustrated history of the Basingstoke Canal, illustrated with a map, and historical notes on the Itchen, Wey & Arun, Salisbury and Southampton and Andover canas. These notes are taken from J. Priestley's "Canals and Railways of Great Britain", published in 1833.

Shortly we hope to re-issue newsletters No. 1 to No. 6 as one publication.

MEMBERSHIP
This now stands at 195. With your help it could be 250 before the end of year.

PETITION FORMS
Plenty more are available. To date, the Society has 1,800 signatures and the I.W.A. has well over 14,000. We have in fact forms for over 7,000 signatures, so let's get filling them in.

NATIONAL WATERWAYS WEEK
Since drafting the newsletter outlining our activities, the Government White Paper on canals has been published, and as a result of this things are to be rearranged. We will circulate details as soon as things are finalised. It is quite likely that the petition forms will still be used, so please carry on collecting signatures.

Owing to Waterways Week, the next newsletter will not be out until mid-November.

STAND
In addition to the Waterways Week activities, we also have a stall which we exhibit at local fetes. This had its first showing at the St. John's Fete, Woking, and will soon be appearing in Brookwood, Knaphill and possibly Ash. This also needs people to look after it...

POSTMEN
We would still l;ike to hear from people in the Woking, Ash and Aldershot areas who could deliver newsletters for us. It involves delivering to 10 or 20 people every 6-8 weeks.

JUMBLE SALE
On Saturday, October 14, we are holding the jumble sale at the Red Cross Hall, Clarence Road, Fleet, at 3pm.

We will want people to donate jumble, sort it ot, be at the hall from 1pm, on October 14 to help with stalls and teas.

If you can help in any way, please contact the Secretary orMr. David Gerry, 10 Fairland Close, Fleet, Hants., who has a loarge garage just waiting for your jumble.

STOP PRESS
We have just heard that Waterways Week has been cancelled. But keep sending in petition forms as they will be used somehow.

Sec: J. Woolgar, 56 Connaught Crescent, Brookwood, Woking, Surrey. B'wood 4064
